On using AI
I know this is a sticky subject were all trying to figure out. I am a developer, not a game developer by trade, but certain development skills just are applicable to whatever your making. We use AI a fair amount at work and I’ve been responsible for pushing that forward and seeing how best we could or should use it.
Without getting into the weeds here is my basic personal rules.
I’ll use it to help develop the game, to help write code and develop features that would otherwise take me so long I just wouldn’t do it due to lack of time. As a tool to help me understand things I’m not sure about. To help me bounce my ideas off. It’s not just writing a prompt (although I’m sure you could write a jigsaw game by just doing that) it’s using it to accelerate making the vision of my game.
What I won’t use it for is writing any text, including on this blog. I cannot stand reading text and AI wrote, and the more you use AI the more it’s easy to spot. These are my words and my thinking, for better or worse.
So that applies to developing my game. It’s my creativity, ideas, words. It’s the power tool I use to help express that. I don’t get it to write text, or just design things for me, or replace thinking. Doing the thinking, tinkering etc is the fun stuff. I want to make something I want to play, not something a quick prompt generated.
That’s my general guide to myself, I could probably benefit from using AI to help copyedit these posts. I just write them off the cuff with very little editing due, again, to time! And i’m sure this will grow and evolve as I use it more.
Basically, don’t be a meat proxy.
